Fluorocarbon vs braid for East Texas bass

Two spools. One reel. Somebody has to sit on the bench.

Quick answer

Fishing worms and jigs around Lake Fork timber? Spool fluorocarbon. Fishing Rayburn or Toledo Bend grass? Braid. Plenty of folks run braid with a fluoro leader and get a bit of both. Your reel, your call.

Why it matters: fluoro’s low visibility and sink help a worm stay down in the stumps. Braid’s lack of stretch means the hookset actually gets there when there’s 40 yards of line and a hydrilla mat in between. Neither one fixes a bad knot.

Who should skip this

  • Skip new line if your reels are already spooled with fresh line. Line is not a collectible.
  • Skip braid if you never fish grass and never make a long hookset. Your fluoro can keep the seat warm.
  • Skip both if you’re fishing with a guide who furnishes tackle. Ask first.

Honest note: we haven’t put these through a hands-on test yet. This is a comparison of published specs and listing details. If we fish them on purpose and keep notes, we’ll update this page and say so.
